OVERVIEW

The historical development of the Laboratory of Biochemistry of Adaptation and Animal Ontogenesis dates back to the establishment of the Ukrainian Research Institute of Physiology and Biochemistry of Farm Animals in 1960.
At the initial stage, the unit functioned as the Laboratory of Higher Nervous Activity, headed by Associate Professor Ivan Medyanyk, PhD (Biology) (1960–1962).
In 1962, it was reorganized into the Laboratory of Neurohumoral Regulation. The laboratory was headed by: Professor Yevhen M. Berkovych, DSc (Medicine) (1962–1963); Professor Zenoviy P. Skorodynskyi, DSc (Biology) (1963–1972); Myron Hanyn, PhD (Biology) (1972–1980); Professor Vasyl Holovach, DSc (Biology) (1980–1988); and from 1988 to 2011 — Academician of NAAS Volodymyr Snitynskyi, DSc (Biology).
In 1994, the laboratory was renamed the Laboratory of Endocrine Regulation, and from 2007 to 2011 it operated as the Laboratory of Pig Nutrition.
Since 2011, it has been known as the Laboratory of Biochemistry of Adaptation and Animal Ontogenesis.  From 2011 to 2013, the laboratory was headed by Oksana Buchko, PhD (Biology). From 2013 to 2021, the Head of the Laboratory was Senior Researcher Ruslana Iskra, DSc (Biology). Since 2021, the duties of the Head of the Laboratory have been performed by Lesia Ponkalo, PhD (Veterinary Sciences).

RESEARCH AREAS

The Laboratory carries out the following tasks:
Research Programme 43 «Adaptive processes in high-yielding farm animals under the influence of environmental and climatic factors»:
  • «To investigate adaptive and metabolic processes in the organism of animals under the action of biologically active substances of various origins».

Research Programme 27 «Regulatory mechanisms of productivity and resistance formation in farm animals»:

  • «Investigation of physiological and biochemical responses and thermographic imaging in animals under stress conditions and development of methods for their correction».
